Anatomical Study of the Maxillary Sunus in Korean Children

Abstract
The authors carried out measurements of eleven items concerning the maxillary sinus using 18 cadavers of Korean children. In addition the author observed without measuring three items concerning to the maxillary sinus using the same materials for comparative purposes.
The results obtained were as follows:
1) The average capacity with mucous membrane was 1.36 and 1.16 cc in 2 years old, 2.20 and 3. 10 cc in 7 years old, and the average capacity without mucous membrane was 2.22 and 1.96 cc in 2 years old, 3.37 and 4.07 cc in 7 years old.
2) The average anteroposterior diameter of the maxillary sinus was 19.60 and 18.90 mm in 2 years old, 24.80 and 23.97 mm in 7 years old, and the average height of the maxillary sinus was 10.70 and 10.60 mm in 2 years old, 17.30 and 20.40 mm in 7 years old. The average transverse diameter of the maxillary sinus was 12.18 and 10.56 nun in 2 years old, 18.50 and 19.40 mm in 7 years old.
3) The average long diameter of the maxillary hiatus was 10.97 and 9.45 mm in 2 years old, 14.07 and 11.28 mm in 7 years old, and average short diameter of the maxillary hiatus was 5.00 and 4.58 mm in 2 years old, 7.50 and 6.30 mm in 7 years old.
4) The average vertical distance from the infraorbital margin to the deepest point of the canine fossa was 7. 10 and 7.30 mm in 2 years old, 9.60 and 10.08 mm in 7 years old, and the average vertical distance from the superior alveolar margin to the deepest point of the canine fossa was 14.84 and 15.27 mm in 2 years old, 18.58 and 18.68 mm in 7 years old.
5) The average depth of the canine fossa was 2.00 and 2.06 mm in 2 years old, 1.43 and 1.73 mm in 7 years old, and the average thickness of the anterior bony wall of the maxillary sinus was 2.59 and 2.74 mm in 2 years old, 1.12 and 1.04 mm in 7 years old.
6) When comparing the level of the floor of the maxillary sinus and the level of the floor of the nasal cavity, the maxillary sinus floor was higher in 44.5%, the same level was found in 33.4% and the maxillary sinus floor was lower than the nasal cavity floor in 22.3%.
7) The deepest point of the canine fossa lay at the level of the upper 1/3 between the infraorbital margin and the superior alveolar margin in 86. 1% and at the level of middle 1/3 in all others.
8) The shape of the maxillary hiatus was elliptical in 36.1¡Æ0. Other shapes observed included slender square, oval, triangular, semicircular, crescent and round forms.
